Sweetgrass: A Container Growing Journal

Living recordCurrent

Version 2 · Sep 27, 2026

What changed,
and why.

Restored this distinct growing topic with its actual observations, chronology, open questions and practical lessons. The earlier saved record remains in history. No current condition or successful outcome has been invented.

All history

Hot-weather arrival, indoor planting, a possible new shoot, and the questions carried into winter.

A growing journal built from dated family observations. The latest report below is historical evidence, not a claim that the plant is in the same condition today. Plans and questions are kept separate from actions and outcomes.

Latest recorded state
  • September 8: Heather asked about leggy growth and brown material at the base. Pruning, division and overwintering actions were not confirmed.
  • July 21 established that the shoots had been planted indoors in a large planter. July 27 recorded a possible lateral shoot, not confirmed establishment.
  • An earlier dry hill was deliberately rejected as a planting location.
What we learned
  • The decision to avoid the dry hill is a real planting choice; the other proposed locations remained options.
  • Distinguish possible growth in a question from growth Heather confirmed.
  • A planned winter arrangement is not an overwintering result.

The story so far

Dated observations, not assumptions about today.

Shoots arrived in a hot package

Heather chose not to put the new shoots on a dry wildflower hill. An indoor pot was the plan while other locations, including near the duck pond, were considered.

Planted indoors; dry to the touch

The shoots were now planted in a large indoor planter. Heather was concerned that they felt dry. There was no recorded survival result.

A possible lateral shoot

Heather asked whether fresh growth at the side was a new shoot. The missing image and lack of a later confirmation prevent treating this as proven establishment.

Container layout and overwintering questions

Heather considered a large container through winter and asked where lemon balm might fit nearby. No final placement was recorded.

A pre-trip check

The plant's lax posture and care before a ten-day trip were discussed. The proposed care and later outcome were not confirmed.

Legginess before winter

Heather asked whether cutting back would encourage growth from below and noted brown material at the base. No cutback, division or winter result was reported.

Next steps & open questions
  • Record the current container location, moisture and any confirmed new shoots.
  • Record any actual pruning or move and its outcome.
  • Add the winter placement and next spring's condition once observed.
Sources & what was completed
