Sensory Notes Matter

Version 2 · Sep 26, 2026

What changed,
and why.

Converted the family evidence principle into a usable guide.

All history

Measurements tell part of the story. Smell, taste, texture, tackiness, lather, set, plant appearance, and animal behavior are family data too.

When the family tests something, preserve what it felt, smelled, tasted, looked, or behaved like alongside the numbers.

Method

  1. Measure what can be measured

Keep amounts, time, temperature, weight, dates, and other concrete observations.

  2. Describe what you experienced

Add the sensory details that explain why a result was good, wrong, different, or worth repeating.

  3. Connect the observation to the version

Keep the note with the exact batch, recipe version, plant observation, or flock event it belongs to.

Insider tips

  • A formula that technically worked can still be wrong for the family if its texture, smell, flavor, lather, or handling was poor.
