Cleaning the Old Top-Bar Hive

Version 2Current

Version 2 · Sep 26, 2026

What changed,
and why.

Converted the old hive-cleaning history into the completed family practice while leaving attraction ideas out of the canonical procedure.

All history

The completed family cleaning practice for the old top-bar hive: washing soda, a stiff brush, thorough rinsing and full air-drying before reuse.

This is the cleaning practice Heather actually reported completing on the old top-bar hive. Earlier attraction ideas belong to planning history, not the cleaning procedure itself.

Ingredients & materials

Check off each item as you go.

Method

  1. Mix the wash

Dissolve washing soda in hot water to make a strong cleaning wash.

  2. Scrub

Scrub the hive surfaces thoroughly with the washing-soda solution and a stiff brush, concentrating on old residue and grime.

  3. Rinse

Rinse away loosened residue and washing-soda solution with clean water.

  4. Air-dry completely

Leave the hive open to air-dry fully before putting it back into use.

Insider tips

  • Keep the completed cleaning practice separate from earlier exploratory ideas about attracting bees.
  • Let wood dry completely before closing or storing the hive.

Family notes

  • Heather reported the washing-soda-and-brush cleaning as completed practice.
